How much is a life worth?

Diego Torres was a building manager. That's the sentence nobody wants to write about a man who walks through walls and disappears. He worked security at Dynamic Technologies' Memphis office, came home to a wife and an eight-year-old daughter who drew pictures of their family, and was, by every account, content. He had everything he wanted. Then he didn't. The loss of his family didn't break him — it focused him. What came after was something else entirely.

The Project Shadow suit gave him what the system wouldn't: invisibility. He walks into rooms he shouldn't be in, stands behind people who don't know he's there, and asks one question before he does what he came to do. "How much is a life worth?" Senator Stephen Ballard offered him two hundred thousand dollars. He threw a knife into the man's back before he finished the sentence. Three police officers. A state legislator. Men in positions of power who Diego believed had failed the people they were supposed to protect — and in failing them, had contributed to the thing that took everything from him.

The suit drains faster in the rain. Yedo figured that out the hard way on a Memphis rooftop during a thunderstorm — the invisibility flickering just long enough to see the silhouette behind him. Diego was faster than he looked, stronger than he needed to be, and he used both to escape. He left a trail of bodies and a city that didn't know what to do with him. Tony — his brother, the one person who still sees the man Diego was — calls him a symbol. A statement about what happens when the people in power decide some lives don't matter. Diego never said whether he agrees.

He is, by any reasonable definition, a killer. The Guardians are hunting him because that's what Guardians do — they protect the people a man like Diego is targeting. But the question Diego leaves in every room he walks out of is one the team has to sit with. The suit came from Dynamic Technologies. The system that failed his family had connections to Dr. Clarence. And the man in the white hooded suit is still out there, moving through Memphis, asking a question nobody wants to answer.
